Nutrition Education Programme
Mother and Child Programme (1-2 years)
Nutrition Education ProgrammeIt was during the early 1970s that this centre ventured into this field. Actual work for this programme started in 1976. The purpose was to instruct the mothers of the surrounding slums in health, hygiene and domestic care. The number of beneficiaries rose from 400 in 1977 to 5000 in 2001. Today, not less than 35000 people benefit from this programme. There are 50 Self Help Groups “SHG”s with 778 active members in the slums situated around Vyasarpadi, Villivakkam, Nemilichery, Koratur, and Avadi. The members are trained to fight for their own rights. They have started income generating projects, and “Sahayees” Self Help Group’s Training Centre which paves way for small savings. In six areas they have income generating projects like soap making, washing powder making, phenyl making etc. Literacy drive has resulted in self-confidence to approach government offices to get their requests fulfilled. It is a women's welfare uplift centre. Other welfare programmes for the mentally ill and physically handicapped are also functioning well.
