Founders day

Rev. Fr.Orpheus Mantovani a Salesian Priest, from Italy had the spirit, zeal and the dreams of helping the poorest of the poor. His dreams came true when the then Archbishop Louis Mathias of Madras-Mylapore asked Fr. Mantovani who was the parish priest then of Tambram to survey Vyasarpadi for a new parish. After studying the place, in 1964, on the feast of the Immaculate Conception he purchased the land at Vyasarpady, which was a dumping ground for cinders. He was moved by the poverty of the people and the pitiful condition of the lepers. He converted this land into living space. The place was over crowded with the evacuated slum and pavement dwellers from the city and with 20,000 Indians repatriated from Burma. The work was officially inaugurated on 2.Feb.1965.

To honour this visionary, every 19th of the month (the day of his death viz 19.05.1967) special memorial services are organised, meetings held, museum visited and his life recounted. Yet, as the Institution is part of the  global Don Bosco Group of institions we celebrate also the memory of St.John Bosco the founder of the Salesians of Don Bosco and thus all the schools, units in the campus come together on January 31st or a more suited day to have a special day to honour the founders of the institution and to recall the tireless work of the very many directors, salesians, religious and the staff/volunteers at Don Bosco - Beatitudes.
